ABSTRACT- In the austral summer of 1998/9, year-round atmospheric monitoring stations were set up at 2 remote sites in the southern hemisphere: Halley Research Station, Antarctica and Moody Brook, Falkland Islands. Samples from the first year have been analysed for a suite of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCs). Data from these sites will be compared with data from remote sites in the northern hemisphere to discuss the significance of concentrations of POPs in the atmosphere of the southern hemisphere. In particular data will be interpreted with respect to long range atmospheric transport, differences in over-water and over-land air concentrations of POPs and global fate and transport of these compounds.

Key words: POPs, atmosphere, long range atmospheric transport, southern hemisphere
