ABSTRACT- The Ripoll stream, a Mediterranean ecosystem tributary of Besos river (NE. Spain), has been receiving a high contaminant discharge from textile industries placed in its floodplain. Since 1997 until 1999 some of these industries have been investigated as a possible "ecological transgression". The Barcelona Department of the National Toxicology Institute (Spain) performed some analysis to test the ecotoxicological potential effect in stream ecosystem We analysed the ecotoxicological features of different wastewater discharged using Photobacterium phosfhoreum, chemical water quality parameters and changes in stream biological community structure. Our work value the effects of industrial wastewater disposed, comparing the chemical and ecotoxicological short-time effect measured in the laboratory, and long-time effect on macroinvertebrates communities, using a biological index measured in the field.

Key words: Textile wastewater disposal, ecological transgression, Mediterranean stream, ecotoxicology
