(W/EH059) Determination of nitro-PAHs and PAHs in air using an integrative method.

Söderström, Hanna1, Bergqvist, Per-Anders 1, 1

ABSTRACT- An integrative sampling method using Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) was developed to determine concentrations of nitro-PAHs and PAHs in air. Simultaneous sampling was performed at 40 locations during two seasons. Samples were taken from several countries in Europe representing the emission source profiles from traffic, metal industries and pulp-mills. The analysis was performed by GC/MS and isotope dilution techniques. In the gas phase 22 PAHs and 7 nitro-PAHs were analysed and differences in concentrations of PAHs were detected indicating a factor of 200 difference between countries. Membrane extracts will be utilised for also other types of chemical analysis as well as toxicity testing of air pollutants. The results will be used for multivariate statistical evaluation of different source patterns and differences between countries.
