(T/FF237) Drinking Water Exposure Profile of Atrazine and Simazine in Major Use States of the USA (1993-1999).

ABSTRACT- A population-linked database was developed to assess exposure to the herbicides atrazine and simazine in drinking water provided by community water systems (CWS) in 31 major use states of the USA. Herbicide concentration and population data from 1993 through 1999 were paired for each CWS and aggregated for all CWS to construct state and multi-state exposure profiles. The atrazine and simazime monitoring data from CWS on groundwater and surface water sources represents the best available information collected by the lead state agency under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The exposure profile for CWS on groundwater and surface water will be compared along with concentration trends. The role of agricultural stewardship to help protect drinking water quality will be illustrated.
Key words: atrazine, simazine, drinking water, exposure assessment
