ABSTRACT- Combined analytical and biological methods are current procedures in the environmental risk assessment of complex mixtures: Nevertheless validation with real samples is an obvious requirement. In the latest years we have proposed extraction/concentration procedures of organic compounds from environmental matrices in combination with different aquatic toxicity tests. These procedures include: for aqueous samples Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) with two different stationary phases placed both single and in sequence; for solid samples, soxhlet and ultrasound-assisted extraction with different organic solvents mixtures. Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) have been used as passive samplers to accumulate non-polar organic compounds from gaseous samples. With the aim of evaluating these methodologies representative compounds of environmentally relevant groups have been selected and the recovery capacity of the above methods and conditions to avoid inherent solvent toxicity has been previously established. This work shows the first part of a validation study in which three laboratories have been involved. One of them has prepared blind aqueous and soil samples, which have been extracted and tested with the proposed procedures. Gaseous samples from an inmision source have been taken with semipermeable membrane devices and with polyurethane foam cartridges. The presence and concentration of different environmentally relevant chemicals have been checked with chromatographic techniques (GC/MS and HPLC).
