ABSTRACT- The OECD Environmental Health and Safety programme, Working Group on Pesticides, has a number of projects underway to assist member countries in hazard and risk assessment. These include; the analysis of national approaches to the assessment of persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) pesticides; the development of guidance on the evaluation of specific studies; and a survey of terrestrial effects assessment approaches. In addition, OECD countries have developed a harmonised format for industry pesticide data submissions (dossiers) and for national / international data review reports (monographs); and are exploring opportunities for sharing the work of agricultural pesticide reviews. Within the broadest context of risk assessment activities, OECD countries are active in the area of pesticide risk reduction. Ongoing projects in this area will be described. An overview of past successes and future expected output will be presented providing an opportunity for discussion on the possibilities for further harmonisation or risk assessment procedures within international pesticide registration schemes.
