ABSTRACT- The ocurrence and distribution of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates (LAS) and their biodegradation intermediates, sulfophenylcarboxylic acids (SPC), in the marine environment have been determined. LAS and SPC concentrations has been measured in water, suspended solids, sediment and interstitial water of different littoral ecosystems. LAS showed an intense biodegradation, sorption and settling of material in suspension. Both processes, sorption and biodegradation have been characterized for LAS and SPC in laboratory experiments at environmental concentrations. Sorption experiments were carried out at different concentrations of C11LAS and C11SPC using marine sediment. Biodegradation experiments were performed for C11LAS, C12LAS, C11SPC, C12SPC and C5SPC with and without inoculum at different temperatures.
