ABSTRACT- Life Cycle Management (LCM) evaluates, according to various environmental, financial, health and safety related metrics, the impacts of a product or service throughout its life cycle, and LCM systematises the management of products as required in the integrated product policy. Today there is a growing need for identifying economic feasible and environmental compatible solutions to enable mankind and our existing business world to manage this challenge. Sustainable development needs to consider the economic requirements, social aspects - including our existing and possible future social systems - as well as the resource efficiency and environmental compatibility of products and product systems. Therefore responsible decision-making in public policy, industry and related fields, is already today beginning to reflect those issues for the future relevance. Such a new business strategy for product sustainability enables the necessary dialogue within the value creation chain as well as with authorities and stakeholders. End-of-pipe and regulatory-based solutions, which are very often expensive, can be replaced by integrated preventive approaches, reducing both environmental burdens and costs. Currently, there is no single program or technique capable of delivering an overall answer with regard to environmental decision making. Environmental approaches and techniques can be described as operating at a management system level, a program level, or a technique level. LCM is operating on a management level, as the name indicates. In this presentation the results of the SETAC LCM Working Group will be presented.
