ABSTRACT- OMNIITOX is a novel project aiming at an enhancement of methods and information tools necessary for decision-making regarding potentially hazardous compounds. The project addresses five main issues 1. Analysis of similarities and differences between the characterisation of hazardous chemicals in life-cycle impact assessment (LCIA) and (environmental) risk assessment ((E)RA) of hazardous chemicals, leading to recommendations regarding their domain of application by companies/regulators and to the communication of results. 2. Analysis of similarities and differences of current methods for characterisation of hazardous chemicals used within LCIA in order to allow harmonisation and possibly identify a best practice. 3. Expansion of the scope of methods used within LCIA. 4. IT-facilitated LCIA/ERA due to increased availability of data and tools. 5. Background for possible inclusion of LCA of chemicals into the regulatory risk assessment of chemicals. The presentation will briefly describe the approaches for problem refinement and case-studies, suggested developments of methods and information tools for impact assessment of chemicals that are planned within the OMNIITOX-project.
Key words: life-cycle impact assessment, risk assessment, risk assessment
