(13-07) Screening of plant species sensitivity to chronic exposures of organic air pollutants.

Dueck, Tom*,1, Van Dijk, Chris1, 1 Plant Research International, Wageningen, The Netherlands

ABSTRACT- The current knowledge of the toxicity of organic air pollutants to vegetations and individual plant species is scarce and data on effect thresholds are generally lacking. To acquire this knowledge, a tiered approach is advocated. If insufficient information on the toxicity of a component is available, acute exposures in simple test systems (range-finding tests) should be employed as a first step. Depending on the results, it may be deemed necessary to perform a second step, chronic exposures under controlled conditions to a larger number of species. This paper describes the second level to this tiered approach of phytotoxicity testing in plants, the chronic exposures. Special attention will be paid to the methodology and technical aspects of the experimental setup for testing plants with organic air pollutants. The first results achieved with these facilities will be presented using an example organic air pollutant.
