ABSTRACT- Input output analysis (IOA) can supports LCA research in several ways. The primary function of IOA to LCA would seem to be the filling of data gaps and assessing larger than second order indirect environmental effects. But other less obvious applications of IOA can be also beneficial for LCA research. LCA's can be extended with social and economical impact data such as impacts on employment, economic growth, occupational hazards and dematerialization. Especially for products or services, where the use phase is the dominant factor for environmental impact, information on use or spending behavior can be valuable. Rebound effects due to behavior on the spending of time and money can be assessed with the help of IOA. As a complementarily tool to supports LCA research, an IOA database for the Netherlands has been developed by IVAM. The database contains environmental emission data aggregated to 100 sectors or 265 commodities. The database has been applied to find relevant indicators and impacts assessments data on the mentioned topics. The presentation will explore the possible applications and the constrains of IOA for LCA research and will contain examples and experiences with the application of the developed database.
Key words: input output assessment, rebound effects, dematerialisation, socio-economical impacts
