ABSTRACT- Imidazolium chlorides, belonging to cationic active substances, create specific group of substances. Their specific properties allow using them in detergents industry as softening agents, in wood preservation, as well as disinfectants and pharmaceuticals. Versatility of imidazolium chlorides induce their penetration to natural water reservoirs. Therefore it is important to evaluate their biodegradation potential and genotoxic activities of biodegradation intermediates. 1-decyl-3-cyclohexyloxymethylimidazolium chloride was selected for the experiment. Experiment was performed under conditions simulating natural water environment. Biodegradation potential was evaluated at the base of spectral analyses 1H NMR and 13C NMR. In genotoxicity assessment Bacillus subtilis strains M45 Rec- and H17 Rec + were used. At the base of spectral analyses it was pointed out, that as a result of microbiological degradation bond between nitrogen and hydrophobic chain was cleavage. After that imidazolium ring and cyclohexan were oxidized. Only partially degraded alkyl chain was in water solution. Genotoxicity tests conducted with final biodegradation products showed lack of genotoxic properties of biodegradation metabolites.
