ABSTRACT- Environmental product information schemes (EPIS) play an important role in European environmental policy. They can award and promote environmentally superior goods and services and they can also provide information on their quality and performance with respect to consumer health, resource consumption, etc. Moreover, they fit very well in a multi-stakeholder policy framework, since elaboration of criteria and acceptance in the market requires involvement of a number of different parties, from government, over business, to consumer and environmental organisations. However, several problems are still unsolved. The project aims to create conclusions and recommendations to improve the current situation and the creation of EPIS. After an inventory of all EPIS in EU and national case studies on three product groups, tissue paper, washing machines and tourism, a 1000 consumer survey per country (Spain, Germany, Italy and Norway) about EPIS was performed. The results obtained in Spain were analysed and compared with the ones from the other countries and amongst the different product groups. Regarding comparisons amongst products, washing machines are the most environmentally observed ones, and more than 30% of Spanish look for environmental aspects when buying them. On the other hand, less than 13% look for them when buying tissue paper. Some questions aimed to investigate the knowledge of consumers on the impacts along different life cycle stages of products. In general, the consumers showed a good knowledge of the use phase impacts, specially for washing machines. Analogously, a good knowledge of environmental impacts related to economical issues (i.e. energy or water consumption) were also pointed out.
