ABSTRACT- It has become an established fact that there is virtue in both integrated overarching (endpoint) and more restricted (midpoint) modelling for LCIA. It is also clear that a method that could present results on different levels along the environmental mechanism would greatly enhance the transparency and the applicability of LCIA and would lead to a better interpretation of results than each one separately. This paper presents the initial design phase of an integrated method that combines these two modelling levels in a single methodology. The methodology can be regarded as a follow up of the Eco-indicator 99 (endpoint) and the CML2001 (midpoint model). The paper addresses (1) the structure that is needed for this combination; (2) the identification of common elements for both types of presentation levels; (3) the management and assessment of model validity and data uncertainties and (4) the interpretation of results, combined at both levels, and (5) the weighting issues. As the project is still ongoing it is not possible to present initial or final results.
