ABSTRACT- In the next edition of the yearly environmental balance for the Dutch government a detailed calculation of the environmental load form consumption will be published for the first time. The intention is to monitor changes by presenting regular updates. Starting point is a detailed statistic on consumer expenditure over 350 product categories. For these categories the direct and indirect environmental load is determined. For the indirect environmental load (load occurring after acquiring the product, and before disposing of it) will be determined using I/O matrixes that link a large set of environmental indicators to value created in the sector. Four different matrixes will be used, the Dutch, the OECD (Europe), OECD (non Europe) and Non OECD. A conversion matrix will link the detailed expenditure statistics to the sectors in the different matrixes, allowing us to calculate the environmental load for every product category

Key words: private consumption, I/O analysis, direct environmental load, indirect environmental load
