ABSTRACT- A large consortium of companies and researchers are collaborating in the EU funded MEPSS project, with the aim to develop a toolkit for designing and assessing product service systems. This paper presents the initial version of the environmental and social assessment toolkit that is used by the participating companies. Key issues that are addressed are (1) the way service systems can be compared with product systems, with special focus on the way the functional unit can be defined (2) Assessment problems in service systems themselves, such as including human labour (3) Assessment of Macro economic and macro ecological impacts, (4) Integration of the people, planet profit principle in a single framework and (5) Simplified presentation of these complex issues to stakeholders. Besides of the environmental assessment the project also includes the development of a service design methodology and an assessment of societal and consumer acceptance. An important part of the research is devoted to integrating the environmental aspects in the service design methodology and in communication with consumers and other stakeholders such as non governmental organisations.
Key words: Product-service systems, design of services, consumer acceptance, People planet profit
