ABSTRACT- Endocrine disruptors are chemicals which interfere with endocrine system function. An endocrine system is found in nearly all animals, including mammals, non-mammalian vertebrates, and invertebrates . The endocrine system consists of glands and the hormones they produce that guide the development, growth, reproduction, and behavior of human beings and animals. Some of the endocrine glands are the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands, the female ovaries and male testes. Hormones are biochemicals, produced by endocrine glands, that travel through the bloodstream and cause responses in other parts of the body. Some of endocrine disruptors can enter into the surface water due to application of these chemicals in agriculture. The contamination of surface water with some endocrine substances such organochlorine substances was investigated in 2000 and 2001 in Kck Menderes river in West Turkey. These substances were analysed in gas chromatography with ECD detector. The DDT and its metabolites concentration reached 170 ng/l in surface water. In contrast, the concentration of dieldrin was found to be higher than the sum of DDT. Endrin showed the lowest concentration of detected pesticides.
