ABSTRACT- For two years a large scale field study was conducted at four different locations concerning the effects of low dosages of glufosinate-ammonium, a leaf acting herbicide, on semi natural vegetation. Therefore species rich road verges and ditch banks not adapted to a history of herbicide use were sprayed with 6 different dosages of glufosinate-ammonium, simulating drift. The parameters studied were short term phytotoxic effects and the effects on biomass, species cover and number of species in autumn (Braun-Blanquêt relevés). Also the recovery of the vegetation was studied over the years. Apart from the results of the herbicide involved the study had strong methodological aspects. For all parameters (phytotox, biomass and vegetation relevés the way they should be investigated is discussed, including scale and time dimensions, number of replicates and statistics. This is of major importance for the future set up of field trials in the pesticide registration procedure (Good Field Tests).
