(27-08) LCA - based Decision Support System for sustainable electric power supply system.

Caizzi, Andrea1, Catenacci, Giorgio1, Girardi, Pierpaolo*,1, 1 CESI, Milano, Italy

ABSTRACT- CESI has developed a decision support system, called SESAMO, aimed to support future national Italian electric power supply system planning. The DSS should allow decision/maker to perceive environmental awareness on his decision, making a step toward sustainability. Although many renewable energy sources have penetrated the electric energy market in the lasts years, we know they will not satisfy Italian energy demand. Moreover, renewable energy power plants are not free from environmental impact. So, it is likely that in a short-middle term scenario, a mix of traditional and renewable energy sources will feed the Italian electric energy system. The DSS will help to define a production system that should meet the power demand and the environmental needs of a . As far as each strategic decision on energy system should be based on a LCA, a complete LCA of the present and the expected future power generation technology has been carried out. As always, the system boundaries also comprehend energy sources extraction and transport, Power Plants construction and decommissioning, power lines construction and decommissioning. Although several database exist dealing with alternative electric power generation technology, they do not feet the data quality we need. Since CESI has a huge experience on environmental impacts connected with Power Plants, we used a mix of primary data, environmental declarations and external LCA database. National statistical data and Environmental Reports have been used for data validation. We can conclude that within DSS we have developed a tool for perform complete LCA on past and future Italian electrical scenarios.
