ABSTRACT- Board manufacturing is a production sector of outstanding importance in several European countries, such as Spain. Nowadays, Galicia is one of the Spanish regions with the greatest production of both fibreboards and chipboards. The environmental impact caused by this sector is significant mainly due to two major problems: the large disposal of wastewaters, which usually contain complex substances such as adhesives and glues and the gaseous emissions from the boilers. This study considers the target of collecting a complete and reliable inventory from that primary industry. In order to achieve this goal, the most productive local companies are being examined. In particular, the production of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) and the Classic Chipboard and the Oriented Strand Board (OSB) have been selected as examples of fibreboards and chipboards. Both processes have common stages in the production, such as the application of high pressure and temperature. The distinct aspect which differentiates them is the use of adhesive in the chipboard manufacture. The inventory will have to consider the consumption of energy sources such as wood or natural gas, chemical compounds, adhesives and electricity, as well as the generation of wastes derived from each stage. As far as waste characterisation is concerned, three different types will be considered: a) gaseous emissions, mainly in form of dust and chemical compounds; b) liquid emissions with suspended solids and other inorganic substances; and c) solid residues, referred as solids with no useful treatment and suitable solids for a profitable post-treatment, for instance reused-oil.
