(80-18) The Feasibility of ACHE as Biomarker of Bivalvia and Fish Contamination withChemicals in the Gulf of Gdansk.

ABSTRACT- SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE ANTHROPOGENIC CONTAMINANTS LOAD REACHING THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT ENTERS THE FOOD CHAINS. TRADITIONALLY IN ORDER TO MONITOR THE EFFECT OF THE PROCESS ON BIOTA ANALYSES OF POLLUTANTS CONTENTS IN ORGANISMS ARE CARRIED OUT. RECENTLY BIOMARKERS WERE RECOGNIZED AS USEFUL TOOL FOR ASSESSMENT THE POLLUTION IMPACT ON MARINE ORGANISMS. THIS IS DUE TO THEIR SENSITIVITY, LOW COST AND SPECIFITY. FOR EXAMPLE ACHE INHIBITION IN BIVALVIA AND FISH IS USED AS A BIOMARKER OF EXPOSURE TO ORGANOPHOSPHOR COMPOUNDS. IN THIS STUDY AS BIOMONITORING ORGANISMS OF COASTAL POLLUTION TWO SPECIES OF BIVALVIA (MACOMA BALTICA, MYTILUS TROSSULUS) AND FLOUNDER (PLATICHTHYS FLESUS) WERE USED. THEY WERE COLLECTED FROM THE COASTAL AREA OF THE GDANSK BAY, AS WELL AS FROM A REFERENCE SITE OUTSIDE THE GULF OF GDANSK. DIFFERENT TISSUES OF BIVALVES (FOOT OF MACOMA, GILLS OF MYTILUS) SAMPLED IN THE GULF OF GDANSK WERE ANALYZED SEPARATELY WITH THE USE OF ELLMAnS AND COLES METHOD. THE LOWEST ACTIVITY OF ACHE (ACHE UNITS: NMOL/MIN.MG PROTEIN) IN THE ANALYSED TISSUES OF MYTILUS TROSSULUS IS OBSERVED IN THE REFERENCE STATION OUTSIDE OF THE GULF OF GDANSK. THE HIGHEST ACTIVITY OF ACHE, IN SELECTED TISSUES OF MYTILUS TROSSULUS WAS ODSERVED IN THE COASTAL STATION NEAR MECHELINKI, AS COMPARED TO THAT IN THE REFERENCE SITE. IN MACOMA BALTICA COLLECTED IN THE MOUTH OF THE VISTULA RIVER THE HIGHEST ACTIVITY OF ACHE WAS MEASURED.
