ABSTRACT- In contrast to North America, ecotoxicological risk assessment of contaminated soils in Europe has - so far - predominantly been conducted in a generic way by the use of soil quality standards or guideline values. However, there is an increasing awareness of the need for more site-specific assessment tools. Today most countries realise a tiered approach is needed in the risk assessment procedures. This presentation outlines the results from several field studies with soil fauna and uses the results of these to evaluate the pros and cons of field studies in ecological risk assessment and discuss the usefulness of introducing field surveys in the context of a tiered risk assessment approach. The cases include ecological risk assessment of copper- and DDT-contaminated sites and LAS in sewage sludge.
Key words: site specific risk assessment, field surveys, ecotoxicological framework, soil fauna
