ABSTRACT- The ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE group, wholly committed to sustainable development, must have thorough knowledge of the environmental impacts of its activities (production and use). So, carrying out the LCA of its main product, the kWh, is essential. Such was the objective of the EDF R&D "CYVIKE" project. From 2000 to 2002, this project, financed by the EDF Group Sustainable Development Division, has required the equivalent of 2 full time researchers, carrying out the LCA of the five main electricity generation systems used by EDF in France (nuclear, hydraulic, coal, gas and diesel). In compliance with ISO 14040 standards, these LCAs were subjected to either a peer review (nuclear, coal, hydro, by ESU-Services, Switzerland) or a critical audit (gas, diesel, by BIO Intelligence Service, France), as regards their importance in EDF's generation capacity. Two calculations are presented : the EDF kWh (production only) and the "EDF grid" estimation (production + purchase + network losses) ; these notions have been widely discussed. It is planned to disseminate the results through the wide distribution of a booklet ; GHG indicator, emissions and consumptions will be accessible upon motivated demand. This project has also enabled us to : - develop, in the project team, an original LCA expertise on electricity generation system, - elaborate the EDF Greenhouse Effect Indicator, which constitutes one of the 20 EDF commitments to Public Services, - develop links and diffuse LCA culture within the whole Group. This notion is being increasingly integrated into various projects (marketing, research, generation), where the EDF kWh LCA has an essential place.
