ABSTRACT- Among others reglementary tools to render use of pesticides more acceptable, Uniform Principles of 91 414 and requirements of 2000/60 Directives are settled at EU level. Directives are fixing objectives but let the implementation under the responsibility of Member States. The presentation deals with a French experience in the field of improvement of water quality. A set of complementary tools has been implemented in France since 1989 in order to ensure a sustainable use of PPP. An improved evaluation of the situation regarding monitoring of water quality from Regional level to an over-view at National level with IFEN statistical informations is the first part of such measures. The gaps in scientific knowledge to be improved and the aim and limits of Scenario and modelling approaches are discussed in the second part. When and how a management at field or landscape scale ought to be used to take in account a complexity of the system with its spatial variability of soils and diversity of soil agricultural usages is the third part. When the farmers behaviour and education becomes an alternative to mandatory measures achieve the methodological overview of what has been done. This is presented in a fourth part. As an illustration of part three and four, a five years experience of integrated measures on La Fontaine du Theil catchment in Britany and the obtained results on surface waters quality improvement are presented (CORPEN method).
Key words: Modelling and scenarios, Monitoring of water quality, Management at catchment and field scale, Example and results
