ABSTRACT- Waters washed from road surface and drainage waters from the layers under the roads are conducted to settlers. Then they are conducted directly to the water stream or to the soil. It is possible to expect they contain various compounds originating from emission gases, from abrading of tires, brakes and road surface, from leakages of fuelling and motor oils during everyday traffic as well as during accidents. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the toxicity of waters originated from the motorways and to compare the concentrations of chosen pollutants with existing limits for waters and sediments. The comparison should lead to the legislative classification of these waters. Five places (signed A - E) of crossing of water streams with motorway D1 (Prague-Brno-Vyskov) were chosen for the sampling. Water and sediment samples from the settlers were analysed for polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitro-polyaromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) and mineral oils. Ecotoxicological biotests on bacteria (Microtox), crustaceans (Thamnotox) and algae (Scenedesmus quadricauda) were performed. Several samples which showed the toxicity in some of the tests were then analysed for the content of chosen metals. The results demonstrated in this work show the importance why to investigate such type of waters.
