ABSTRACT- Coastal and especially lagoon environments in Mediterranean countries are subject to increasing stresses due to urban, industrial and tourist development. Although impacts are still moderate in Tunisia and Morocco, it is urgent to prevent further imbalance. Nador and El Meleh are two coastal lagoon which are studied within a european project (ICA3-CT-2002-10012). Environmental stresses (old day saline extraction, waste water station releases, industrial and urban releases , present fishery activity) threaten its cleanliness and may compromise the economical activity linked to water quality. The general objective of the project is to safeguard their protection and to lead the development of sustainable strategies at a local scale. Three steps are foreseen to achieve these objectives : improve the knowledge of naturally occuring mechanisms of lagoon ecosystem functioning at different scales, understand the interaction of pollutants with the physical environment and study the interaction of human activity on the lagoon ecosystem. The specific scientific objectives of this third step are : 1) to built up the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the fishery (in Morocco), and the LCA of the waste water stations (in Tunisia and Morocco) in order to give a tool for regional sustainable development, 2) to give a spatial representation of LCA results by a SIG in order to help decision makers. This poster presentation will give the first results on the Life Cycle Assessment tool elaboration.

Key words: Life Cycle Assessment, Coastal lagoon sustainability, LCA and GIS coupling
