ABSTRACT- A fate study on metazachlor was conducted as part of the test phase of the new indoor and outdoor system of lentic and lotic mesocosms of the Federal Environmental Agency in order to gain experience in the operation and management of the devices. The herbizide active agent metazachlor was used as model substance because it has been applied in various plant protection products for rape and other cruciferious crops in considerably quantities, decomposes by forming different metabolites, and is moderately lipophilic. Furthermore, some test results on fate behaviour are available. In September 2002, one lentic and one lotic outdoor mesocosm was spiked with c. 120 - 200 g/l metazachlor. The substance and some of its main metabolites were monitored in different media (water, interstitial water) for 3 months detected by GC-PND / GC-MS. Simultaneously, an extensive set of hydrobiological standard parameters was recorded in the systems. Differences between the lotic and the lentic system as well as deviations from laboratory tests are discussed.
