(WEP/64) In vitro test to determine Cd bioaccumulation in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

ABSTRACT- The aim of this work is the evaluation of cadmium release from the sediment in different concentrations of oxygen in water column: 1) oxygenated condition (7-7.5 mg L-1 O2); 2) hypoxic condition (4.5-5 mg L-1 O2) and 3) anoxic condition (0.5-1 mg L-1 O2), through the bioaccumulation in Mytilus galloprovincialis. Sediment collected was spiked with additional cadmium in concentration of 30 mg Kg-1 d.w. and aged from 2 weeks in order to permit diagenesis. After this period the sediment was resuspended by glass helix and the elutriated water was transfered by peristaltic pump from sediment's tank to aquarium with mussels. Mytilus galloprovincialis has been exposed for 14-d and salinity and temperature was mantained at 33‰ and 18°C respectively; during this period 8 mussels per each [O2] was collected after 0, 3, 9 and 14 days since exposition. This experimental design has been applied also to sediment Cd un-spiked as control. The Cd concentration has been determined in digestive gland of mussels being the hepatopancreas the target organ for heavy metal bioaccumulation. The results demonstrated that in oxygenated and hypoxic condition, there is the greatest release of Cd from sediment being the concentrations of cadmium in hepatopancreas of mussels at 14-d (last test's day): 3779.74 ng g-1 (d.w.) in oxygenated condition; 3890.77 ng g-1 (d.w.) in hypoxic condition and 2604.23 ng g-1 (d.w.) in anoxic condition respectively. In the different [O2] the control shows similar concentration of cadmium in hepatopancreas of mussels at 14-d (last test's day) and they are lower than spiked test being: 109.39 ng g-1 (d.w.) in oxygenated condition; 66.67 ng g-1 (d.w.) in hypoxic condition and 108.15 ng g-1 (d.w.) in anoxic condition.
