ABSTRACT- Czech Republic, being one of the most developed among the pre-accession countries to the European Union has made significant efforts to overcome the negative environmental effects of the rapid industrialization during the last four decades. The problem of PBT compounds is highly relevant in the context of the CEE countries such as Czech Republic. Measurements that were carried out to map the situation show a high degree of contamination in the environment especially by PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and dioxins (polychlorinated dibenzo p dioxins and dibenzofurans). The national inventory of these pollutants was completed. This inventory contains detailed information on the present state of that field in the Czech Republic with inventories as appropriate. Very broad inventory also summarised and evaluated all available information concerning to PAHs, OCPs (including toxaphen), PCBs, PCDDsFs contamination of soils in the Czech Republic including the evaluation of effects of floods in the years 1997 and 2002. The results of spatial and temporal trends concerning to these types of pollutants in the soils will be presented and discussed in the relation to the European results of UNEP GEF Project Regionally Based Assessment of Persistent Toxic Substances, which where prepared by authors of presentation too. The results were also used for the validation of regional models of PBTs distribution in the European region.
