(MOP/56) On selecting the reliable data of persistent organic pollutants.

ABSTRACT- Reliable environmental fate and risk assessment procedures strongly rely on the quality of measured or estimated input parameters, i.e. various environmental and molecular properties of xenobiotic chemicals (vapor pressure, water solubility, n-octanol/water partition coefficient, Henry Law constants, soil sorption coefficient, bioaccumulation factor, biodegradation rate, etc). However, the identification of environmental risks associated with the existing chemicals is greatly hindered since the measured environmental and molecular properties are not available for the majority of these chemicals. Thus, the estimated parameters are applied regularly in risk assessment procedures and in many instances such parameters are of questionable quality. Furthermore, recent discussion on the quality of water solubility and n-octanol/water partition coefficient of various persistent organic pollutants (R. Renner, Environ.Sci.Technol. 36(21), 411A, 2002) has clearly demonstrated that even selecting a reliable measured value may not be a simple and straightforward procedure. The aim of this presentation is to describe our long-term experience in selecting and estimating reliable data for environmental and molecular properties of persistent organic pollutants. Consequently, a potential procedure for selecting reliable data for environmental fate and risk assessment will be outline. This procedure will be demonstrated on selecting reliable n-octanol/water partition coefficients for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and similar chemicals. This way we hope to assist present and future environmental fate and effects modelers to select reliable input parameters for evaluating a chemical's ultimate fate and toxicity.
