ABSTRACT- The deliberations of the new SETAC-Europe Working Group on Life Cycle Costing (LCC) will be discussed, along with the vision, goal and scope which were adopted at the Barcelona (December 2002) Kick-off meeting. Specific themes covered in this presentation will include the basic scientific and procedural concepts of LCC which must include an assessment over several traditional stages used in life cycle assessment (LCA), generally from cradle to grave. Furthermore, the linking of LCC with life cycle inventory (LCI) and impact assessment (LCIA) methodologies, in the form of two-dimensional analyses, will be discussed. An examination of the role of LCC in public, for profit, corporations will be presented, along with the present challenges in developing a LCC methodology and its state-of-the-art. The former include system boundary questions, data definition and format as well as allocation issues. The presentation will also refer to and examine the results of a previous SETAC-Europe Working Group on life cycle management (LCM), many of whose cases, now submitted as a SETAC monograph, embody economic and environmental criteria.
