(TU8/1) Biological Effects of Environmental Pollution in Coastal Marine Ecosystems : the BEEP project.
Garrigues, Philippe1, 1 University de Bordeaux 1, Talence, France
ABSTRACT- The goal of this research programme is to evaluate the use of biological markers determined in marine organisms as a means of assessment of chemical contamination for certain selected coastal zones around Europe. for coastal communities dependent from sea resources. Different types of coastal European environments (Baltic Sea, North Atlantic Sea, Mediterranean Sea) are investigated by 30 participants who co-operate on the selected environments through a long term study. Specific results dealing with the first year of the project will be presented. Various marine species ( fish, bivalves, crabs) have been collected and analysed for several biomarker mesasurements ( AchE, metallothioneins, lysosomal stability, fluorescent bile metabolites, EROD activity). Comparisons will be presented and discussed between various species and various coastal marine environments. The Programme "Environment and Sustainable Development " from the European Union ( BEEP Project EVK3-2000-00543) is acknowledged for its support.
Key words: marine coastal environment, biomarkers, chemical contamination
