ABSTRACT- Beside principal chemical contaminants (PAHs, PCBs, pesticides, phtalates, trace metals lourds, dioxins), we find in the aquatic environment substances such as hormonal steroids oestradiol, testosterone, ect.) used in numerous hormonal treatments. Detergents such as alkylphenols are also nearly systematically encountered. Various pharmaceutical substances are also present. Beyond them we can find antidepressant (diazepam, amitriptylin, ect.), analgesics (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, salicylic acid, ect.), antibiotics (neomycin, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, ect.), lipid regulators (clorifibric acid, gemfibrozil, ect.). Important quantities of these molecules are consumed in our occidental society and are rejected in fine in the aquatic medium via sewage treatment plants (incomplete destruction). These compounds could have important toxic effects towards aquatic organisms but in order to estimate environmental risks there is a need for data documenting the effective contamination of the aquatic environment by these molecules. The work presented here deals with the development of analytical protocols in order to analyze all the three classes in aquatic media. These developments involve both extraction and purification methods such as SPE, SPME and microwave assisted extraction but also analytical developments for identification and quantification by GC/MS and LC/MS. We have then applied these analytical developments to an annual survey of the contamination of the Seine estuary. The sources and behavior of the different compounds will be discussed as well as the seasonal variations.
Key words: alkylphenols, steroids, pharmaceutical substances, Seine estuary
