ABSTRACT- A number of activities have begun at European member state level to look at risk mitigation measures to protect aquatic ecosystems potentially exposed to pesticides. Approaches vary significantly and include both regulatory and voluntary schemes. One of the tasks of the FOCUS work group on Landscape and Mitigation Factors in Ecological Risk Assessment for Pesticides is to develop broad guidance on the inclusion of quantitative information on risk mitigation measures within European regulatory procedures. As a first step, current approaches implemented within the various member states have been collated and compared. The review focuses on risks to the aquatic compartment and exposure has been divided into that arising from spray drift, surface runoff and sub-surface drainflow. Current practice will be described and opportunities for future harmonisation discussed.
