ABSTRACT- The common air pollution is studied for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons mainly in the particulate phase, but also in the gas phase. The heavy PAHs are associated with the particles and light PAHs are dominant in the gas phase. Petrogenic or alkylated PAHs relates to petroleum products, while the pyrogenic PAHs origins from combustion sources. This study describes the relationship between gas phase pollution profiles and three effluent areas. Samples were taken in the visinity of refinary, urban heating area and intense traffic situation. In these different exposure environments the relationshsip between marker compounds and other PAHs were investigated. Is the marker compound BaP a good and representative compound or does it not describe the environmental situation/exposure? What are the other compounds that could be used instead of or together with BaP? This study will discuss the power of this extrapolation. Sice the study focus on gas phase compounds the sampling will be performed with semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs). Sampling effiency will be calculated by using performance reference compounds (PRCs). In addition, several other compound classes as PCBs and Pesticides were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method.
