Aphrodisiacs and Botanical Supplements: Myth and Reality. Krueger, Robert*,1, Friar, Robert*,2, 1 College of Pharmacy, Big Rapids, MI, USA2 College of Arts and Sciences, Big Rapids, MI, USA ABSTRACT- This session will provide an overview of the history and current status of products available on the market that are considered to be aphrodisiacs or botanical remedies for various sexual problems. The session emphasizes a common sense approach to selection of a product and trains the participant in product identity, safety concerns and possible effectiveness so that they may knowledgably counsel a client on making an informed choice. Discussed in the session will be information sources, the basics of the human reproductive system, how this system interacts with various supplements, and detailed descriptions of over 18 supplements available world wide and some of the products in which they appear. Objectives The participant will be able to: 1. Counsel his/her clients on how to choose a botanical supplement. 2. List legitimate, scientifically sound sources of information on botanical supplements 3. Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the human reproductive systems 4. Discuss how supplements may affect the reproductive systems 5. State, for each aphrodisiac discussed, its name, part used, active ingredient(s), efficacy and pertinent safety considerations. Sexual Reproductive Anatomy and Physiology: The Basics III. Profiles of 18 common marketed aphrodisiacs 1. Includes: names, parts used, safety, efficacy, and other health concerns with their uses 2. Includes those Hot Plants listed by Kilham Relevance to Sexology The consumer of today, bombarded by advertisements for sexual enhancement supplements, is presented few facts with which to make an intelligent choice. This session will present those facts, emphasizing safety and known physiological effects, enabling the sexual health care professional to better counsel his/her clients. Targeted Audience Sex therapists and educators, psychologists, psychiatrists, other MDs and professionals in the sexual health care field.
