ABSTRACT- Topic and rationale for the session "I'm Ready for My Close-up" AKA How to Make the Media Your Ally. The media is one of our most powerful allies in delivering accurate information to the public. As sexuality educators and professionals it is incumbent upon us to present this information in an accessible and accurate manner. Let us not overlook that the sources of misinformation for the media are the same as those for the general public, therefore having media-savvy experts in our field is crucial for our profession. This presentation aims to give sexuality educators and professionals the unique tools necessary to be their best with any media, be it television, radio or print, local, regional, national or international. Objectives of the session: To give sexuality professionals who are in the media spotlight the unique sensitivity, awareness and presentation skills that will prepare them for any media situation. To have them be better prepared and more confident so they can more easily make the media their ally in delivering their specific information/message. Session outline: How and why each media animal is different: Print, Radio & TV and how to prepare for them. Fielding Interviews: How to make them happen and how to determine the right fit. Creating your own unique sound bytes for a range of situations. When you need a publicist. Doing the Interview - Easy step-by-step preparation points. - Establishing your credibility in 15 seconds or less. - Determine the win-win focus of the interview. - Methods to steer and take the lead in any interview so you are able to deliver your points without being confrontational or bullying. - Tried and true techniques for fielding interviews. - Questions to ask to make sure you are indeed the expert they need. The reality of interviews. They often change midstream, and how to lead the interview so your important points get delivered. - Creating the win-win presentation. - Ways to prepare for confrontational interviews - How to politely sidestep inappropriate personal questions Interactive mock interviews and session conclusions Here attendees can role play difficult or particularly contentious situations and have their peers share their suggestions.
