The prevalence of erectile dysfunction in nigerians with diabetes mellitus.

ABSTRACT- introduction and objectives: erectile dysfuntion (ED) is a worldwide problem which is generally undertreated especially in this part of the world. This is a problem that the sufferers are often not freely able to discuss with their doctors especially in Nigeria because of the problem of stigmatization.Such men are to the uninformed viewed as being "less than men". diabetes mellitus is one disorder that has been associated with this all-important disability. The underlying pathology may be psychological or organic viz arising from vasculopathy and neuropathy just to mention a few. this study sets out to determine the prevalence of this problem in Nigerians with diabetes mellitus. Main body and results: this is a prospective and still ongoing study carried out in the Diabetes Clinic of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. Information was obtained by an interview based approach. Every male with DM seen by me was interviewed one on one regarding erectile dysfunction. A total of 96 men with DM were seen during a period of one year. 33 (34.3%) had ED. Of these 8(24%) had type 1DM while the remaining had Type 2 DM.The mean age(SD) of people with Type 1 DM that had ED was 49.7(8.9) while for Type 2, it was 61.2(0.97). In all the age range was 32-82.Only two percent of all affected persons were on treatment (testosterone replacement and herbal medications.). Results: ED is a fairly common complication of DM in Nigerian males. It is a condition that has been largely unaddressed.
