Measuring the Sexual-Esteem on adolescents: presentation of the Sexual-Esteem Scale.

ABSTRACT- Objective:The objective of this study is to present the development and the validation of the Sexual-Esteem Scale for adolescents. Method: A total of 207 middle-adolescents (age 14-18) 101 males and 105 females, took part in this study. The sample with mean age 15.42 (SD=1.14) was drawn from a High School in Salamanca (Spain). The author developed an 76 item questionnaire inspired from the literature review and applied it to the sample. (please indicate the lickert scale) The application was conducted in several group sessions (45-50 individuals per session) and took around one hour. After statistical analysis (item and factor analysis) the scale was reduced to thirty items. Results:The item analysis revealed a high internal consistency f = 0.76 for the 30 item scale. The factor structure of the instrument was determined by principal components factor analysis with Varimax rotation and Kaiser normalization. It provides a nine-factor solution, factors were called: Corporal Satisfaction, Evaluation of the capacity for passion, Evaluation of attractiveness, Evaluation of the self-efficacy to approach, Relationship satisfaction, Sexual orientation comfort, Capacity to engage in compromise, Openness of parents for sex-talking and Satisfaction with the body changes during adolescence. This factor structure explained the 60.58% of the Variance. While there is a general tendency towards equality among genders, differences were found in factor: Corporal satisfaction, within women obtained lower scores than men. Conclusions:Psychometrical analysis demonstrated that the Sexual-Esteem Scale for Adolescents (SES-a) is an appropriate instrument to evaluate this psychological dimension.
