ABSTRACT- Objective: To characterize the prevalence of self-reported comorbid diseases in a cohort of men with erectile dysfunction (ED) followed for 3 years. Method: 808 men aged between 20 and 80 years with self-reported ED were recruited from the original Men's Attitudes to Life Events and Sexuality (MALES) 2004 cohort of 2912 men with self-reported ED from eight countries (USA, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil), 30 months after the initial study. Self-reported comorbidities were assessed and compared with answers obtained from this cohort of 808 men in the 2001 survey. Results: There were statistically significant (p<0.001) increases in the proportion of men who self-reported diabetes (from 21% in 2001 to 30% in 2004), depression / anxiety (from 26% to 35%, respectively), and hypertension (from 44% to 51%, respectively), and non-significant increases in hypercholesterolemia (from 43% to 48%, respectively), and cardiovascular disease (CVD) / angina (from 26% to 29%, respectively) over the 30-month follow-up. Conclusion: Men with ED in this cohort report significant increases in comorbid illness over a 30-month period. These data provide further evidence that ED may be a sentinel for other vascular illness and suggest the need for awareness among clinicians of these comorbid associations. Further research to elucidate causality is needed.

Key words: erectile dysfunction, comorbidity, diabetes, depression, hypertension
