Performance Anxiety Sexual Scale. Assalian, Pierre*,1, Betito, L.*,1, Duder, S*,1, 1 Montreal General Hospital, Montréal, Québec, Canada ABSTRACT- Objective: Is to develop a brief and reliable measure of performance anxiety that is psychometrically valid. The goal was to develop a self administered questionnaire that would be suitable for use by clinicians and researchers, one that would be minimally burdensome to patients. Design and Methods: Data were collected for a total of 136 cases, 57 clinical and 79 non-clinical. Data for each case included responses to the performance anxiety and IIEF scales, plus some demographic information. Results: The mean IIEF scores for the clinical and non -clinical samples were significantly different-highly significant (p=<.001) for the erectile function intercourse satisfaction and overall satisfaction subscores . The difference was significant (p<.05) for the sexual desire subscore . Performance anxiety item validation: After eliminating 9 of the original 22 questions, a good scale could be constructed from the remaining 13 questions. For each of these questions individually: - Mean values for the clinical and non-clinical samples were significantly different. - There was a significant correlation with the total IIEF score. For all of the 13 questions , significance was at least at the p<.01 level; for almost all,p<.001. For this group of 13 questions, inter-item reliability was very good- Cronbach′s alpha = .95, with all item-total correlations >.62. Conclusion: The PASS, a 13 item questionnaire is the first to be developed to measure performance anxiety in males suffering from ED. It is useful in clinical trials and in clinical work. Key words: performance, anxiety |
