Pharmacological treatment of male erectile dysfunction: new perspective.

Carrier, Serge*,1, 1 McGill University, Montreal, Qc, Canada

ABSTRACT- The success of oral pharmacotherapy in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) has been accompanied by a renewed interest into the physiology and signal transduction pathways involved in the male erection mechanism. This has not only led to an improved understanding of the molecular mechanisms responsible for male sexual arousal, but has ushered in several novel approaches to the pharmacological treatment of ED, as well as identifying new therapeutic targets. While currently available pharmacological treatments such as sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenefil successfully treat patients with ED with varying etiologies, the wide array of physical and psychological conditions that lead to ED coupled with different medication side effect profiles complicate treatment. New therapies under development are poised to change the dynamic of ED treatment, offering doctors and their patients alike several different tailored treatment options. Since currently available therapies have set the standard in terms of ease of use, efficacy, onset of action and low side effect profile, novel therapies have high a benchmark to which they must reach. The purpose of this review is to provide a window into the evolving advances in the pharmacological treatment of male erectile dysfunction.

Key words: Erectile dysfunction, New therapy
