Abstract:
The localization of substance P (SP) and its receptors in early human placenta were studied using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. The cytotrophoblast, cyncytiotrophoblast, stroma cells, capillary endothelium in placenta villi all appeared to be SP immunoreactive and could be detected with SP mRNA hybridization signal in cytoplasm. The blood islet cells in placenta villi all shown SP immunoreactivity. The cytotrophoblast, syncytiotrophoblast, stroma cells, capillary endothelium in placenta villi all appeared to be SP receptor immunoreactivity. These results suggest that human placental villi may not only produc SP but also be a SP target organ, and that SP may not only play roles in placental development by paracrine and autocrine interaction but may also take part in regulating fetal development by endocrine actions. .
