608 THE MECHANISM OF THE EFFECT OF PHYSALIS ALKEDENGI ON ESTROUS CYCLE IN THE EWE. Khazali, Homayoun1, 1 ABSTRACT- The Mechanism of the Effect of Physalis Alkedengi on Estrous Cycle in the Ewe. H Khazali. University of Tarbiat Modares, Tehran, Iran It has been firmly established that physalis alkedengi delay estrous cycle in the mammals. The goal of this study was to determine the mechanism on which physalis alkedengi delay estrous cycle in the ewe. Fourty ewes were randomly assigned to an experiment with a 2x2 factorial design.Ewes were either received 0, 250, 500 or 1000 mg of physalis alkedengi/Kg BW daily for 45 days. Animals were bled every twice a day throughout the experiment. Blood samples were kept at 4 degree C until centrifugation.A saturated sodium citrate solution (sodium citrate solution/ml blood)was added to the samples before centrifugation to prevent clotting of plasma during storage. Samples were assayed for estradiol and progesterone by double-antibody RIA.Ovulation were determined by laborascopy. Data were analysed by split-split plot in time. Feeding 0, 250 and 500 mg of physalis alkedengi did not changed the mean plasma concentrations of estradiol and progesterone in the animals. Feeding 1000 mg of physalis alkedengi significantly decreased the mean plasma concentrations of estradiol and progesterone in the animals. The result of this study showed that the effect of physalis alkedengi on the estrous cycle is mediated through the decreased of the mean plasma concentrations of estradiol and progesterone. KEY WORDS: physalis alkedengi , estrous cycle, hormones, ewe |
