ABSTRACT- As ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is still the major unknown complication of ovarian stimulation with exogenous gonadotropins during in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET) process, this study aimed to investigate the ability of human serum albumin (hSA) in reducing the severity or break through signs of OHSS. OHSS was induced in six rabbits by administration human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG)/human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The occurrence of OHSS was measured during the study. The examination group was administered hSA after OHSS induction. The severity of OHSS was compared in two situations, after administration of hSA and before that to study ability of hSA on controlling the signs of OHSS in rabbits undergoing experimentation. Blood samples were collected directly through the heart puncture in different intervals to measure serum E-2, P, albumin and total protein levels. On d 15 after administration of hCG, all the animals were euthanised by overdose injection of Nesdonal. Tissue specimens were collected for pathological studies. Main out come measures included: A) signs of OHSS such as the changes in body weight, biometry of the ovaries and serum E-2, P, albumin, and total protein levels; B) pathological changes due to OHSS in different organs; C) the degree of ovarian stimulation and occurred OHSS visualized by Ultra sonography. There were gross pathological changes in some organs of animals undergoing examination such as cervix, ovaries, lungs, and kidneys, which had happened due to OHSS. Increased level of E-2 and reduced level of P due to OHSS were seen. No significant different was seen in severity of OHSS in two situations, before and after administration of hSA in animals. There were no gross pathological changes in control group of animals. Different signs of OHSS that were seen in the research along with other pathological changes in mentioned organs were due to OHSS and inability of hSA in controlling OHSS in animals undergoing examination that was supported by the followed ultra sonographical studies. In spite of the previous reports that hSA can prevent the OHSS in somecases but we could not find a significent result in this regard.
